"What Child is this?" This riddle of old has seen many generations, yet should we care about it today? And indeed in this troubled year of 2020, one could say that we have bigger issues to deal with than some ancient question. But we say this, that in the experiences of the past year, we are persuaded more than ever of our own frailty in this life, and of the troubled state of this world. And we ask, can there be deliverance from suffering, can there be peace greater than what we already know?So in this season of Christmas, we reflect on the birth of our Messiah, whose name is Immanuel, "God with us". To the Israelites after being exiled and conquered, a promise of a Deliverer from oppression, oh what sweet a promise to them. But to us today, can we relate? Perhaps for the first time in this generation, we catch a glimpse of what it might feel like to long for deliverance. But while the world is content to merely seek a temporal relief from the virus, we know that there are problems deeper than the pandemic itself. For we are persuaded that we need to be delivered from sin, and this is why this Child gives us hope, as it has been promised of old:"For unto us a Child is born,Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be calledWonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6From all of us at GRC, we wish you a Merry Christmas. ...
